What are concrete block moulds?

A concrete block mould is a tool that can be used to make building blocks out of concrete. Most concrete block moulds, like our range of U Moulds, are shaped like a box with an open top and bottom. Once you pour wet concrete mixture into the box, it dries and hardens, until the mould can be removed and the block is ready for use.

Block moulds have been used to create construction blocks for thousands of years, and were certainly used in Egypt, where brick moulds dated to 1,500 BC have been unearthed. Since the advent of electricity, making blocks from block moulds has never been easier or more efficient, although in many developing parts of the world the manual block mould process is still used to this day.

How to make concrete blocks with a Blue Mold

The actual process of creating concrete blocks couldn’t be simpler, thanks to our simple to use range of Blue Molds. Our quick eight-stage process will guide you through each step of the journey.

1. Place the mould on a flat, level surface. Use a spirit level if you’re uncertain.
2. Insert the recess formers and lifting pins.
3. Apply release oil to the interior of the mould, so it can be easily removed after the concrete has set.
4. Slowly pour wet concrete mixture into the mould until it is full, vibrating the concrete in the process to ensure a compact block.
5. Smooth out the concrete with a trowel to tackle any irregular areas.
6. Leave the concrete to set – usually for 24 hours, although this is dependent on the mix of your concrete.
7. Once dry, remove the wedges that close each side, and then remove each side.
8. Lift and rotate the concrete block out of the mould to check for quality. Once you’re happy, the block is ready.
