The Process of Concrete Block Moulds

The Process of Concrete Block Moulds

In the construction sector, concrete block moulds remain a popular choice for projects of all shapes and sizes. The versatility and re-usability of concrete moulds is one of the key reasons they remain so popular, offering a straightforward process of moulding concrete blocks to your specifications.

Unlike bricks that need to be fired before they set, concrete block moulds are extremely energy efficient, and unlike pre-fabricated concrete panels, they can easily be modified for bespoke solutions. Once you grasp how easy the process of concrete block moulding can be, you’ll be surprised at the time and money you can save by using them.

Utranazz’s range of U-Moulds are from premium manufacturer Blue Molds®. The moulds are available in numerous sizes and can be fitted with specific dividers to form the shape you need, when you need it. But how does a Blue-oldwork, and are concrete block moulds the solution to your next construction project?

What are concrete block moulds?

A concrete block mould is a tool that can be used to make building blocks out of concrete. Most concrete block moulds, like our range of U Moulds, are shaped like a box with an open top and bottom. Once you pour wet concrete mixture into the box, it dries and hardens, until the mould can be removed and the block is ready for use.

Block moulds have been used to create construction blocks for thousands of years, and were certainly used in Egypt, where brick moulds dated to 1,500 BC have been unearthed. Since the advent of electricity, making blocks from block moulds has never been easier or more efficient, although in many developing parts of the world the manual block mould process is still used to this day.

How to make concrete blocks with a Blue Mold

The actual process of creating concrete blocks couldn’t be simpler, thanks to our simple to use range of Blue Molds. Our quick eight-stage process will guide you through each step of the journey.

  1. Place the mould on a flat, level surface. Use a spirit level if you’re uncertain.
  2. Insert the recess formers and lifting pins.
  3. Apply release oil to the interior of the mould, so it can be easily removed after the concrete has set.
  4. Slowly pour wet concrete mixture into the mould until it is full, vibrating the concrete in the process to ensure a compact block.
  5. Smooth out the concrete with a trowel to tackle any irregular areas.
  6. Leave the concrete to set – usually for 24 hours, although this is dependent on the mix of your concrete.
  7. Once dry, remove the wedges that close each side, and then remove each side.
  8. Lift and rotate the concrete block out of the mould to check for quality. Once you’re happy, the block is ready.

What are the benefits of concrete block moulds?

Using concrete block moulds can be a cost-effective alternative to precast construction blocks or kiln-fired bricks because only the mixing process requires energy. Concrete blocks can set at room temperature in a dry, sheltered location overnight, saving money on electricity and fuel. That makes them perfect for project planners looking to maximise their budgets and produce consistent, reliable construction blocks without breaking the bank. The re-usability of concrete block moulds also means they deliver incredible value for money in the long run.

Additionally, concrete block moulds are versatile for a number of reasons. The concrete mix that you use determines the nature of your finished concrete block, meaning you can tailor your mixture to suit a project’s requirements or create blocks with different properties using the same block moulds. With the addition of dividers, like stair dividers, you can also use the same moulds to create drastically different shapes with very little hassle.
